  Coop's Corner

About Coop's Corner: The semi-regular column by co-founder and editor-in-chief, Steve Cooper.

The fantasy football season can put a lot of stress on marriage. Here are Coop's 10 tips to thrive during fantasy football.

It's the most wonderful time of year—yes, football season! I am an unapologetic fanatic. Over a decade ago I began playing fantasy football with my friends. This was before the days of automated drafts and mobile apps, and as the commissioner I would wake up on Monday morning and go through the box scores in the newspaper (remember those) and hand tally the weekend data.

Fantasy sports have grown quite a bit since then. According to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association (FSTA), 51.5% of fantasy sports players are not married, so we'll estimate married players are also near the 50% mark.

Valentines Day is an important day for couples to express their love for one another. This doesn't require money, but that doesn't stop the billions from being spent.

It's that time of year again. Cupid's arrows are flying, as are the data points around this romantic holiday. It's really close to Valentine's Day, but there's still time to have an impact. According to flower retailer, FTD Companies, Inc., Valentine's Day is a very last minute holiday for shopping, whereas Mother's Day and Christmas are typically 3-4 week selling seasons. FTD has indicated that this year is particularly last minute for guys with the holiday falling between two giant sporting events: the Super Bowl and the Olympics… adding that the severe weather in parts of the country is adding to the last minute shopping. If that weren't enough, e-commerce continues to make it easier for guys to wait longer before making a purchase.

Blending tech with your marriage doesn’t have to be a virtual tightrope. Create clear boundaries with one another and use your gadgets to grow closer.

The relationship of technology and marriage has a long history. I'm sure at some point during the Stone Age a woman was frustrated because her mate wouldn't step away from the fire and come to bed. More recently, televisions became places of congregation for couples and families. Today, our unions are intertwined with smartphones, tablets, social networks and more. The current tech du jour is Facebook. The question we have to ask is, are these tools good for marriages or bad? The answer: potentially both.

Why it’s important for you and your spouse to celebrate Valentine’s Day and continue the tradition throughout the year.

I'll be the first to admit that not long ago, I would have been quick to declare that Valentine's Day is nothing more than a "Hallmark" holiday. I’ve often said, "It's just a reason for greeting card companies to push more product." While they certainly capitalize on the holiday, I had an epiphany that brought me on board with the celebration.

Even before the light bulb went off above my head, I still celebrated Valentine's Day and even enjoyed the holiday, although a certain piece of me felt it was contrived.

If the pen is mightier than the sword, we've got a battle with the language used in marriage.

Who wants to be married? Dying sounds more proactive than being married. The word married, whether used as a noun, verb or adjective sounds past tense and settled. Married comes across as boring and evokes no excitement. Dating, on the other hand, is an action word. Dating sounds like things are happening, you sense a future with endless possibilities and dreams around the corner. Married rolls off the tongue with the thud of dirt clods falling on a casket.
